This page explains, in plain terms, what happens to the data involved when you use this site. It is short because the service itself is simple: there are no accounts, no profiles and no database of visitors.
Who is responsible
DNStotal is operated by the owner of the domain dnstotal.com. For anything related to this policy, write to the address at the end of the page.
What we process, and why
When you run a check we handle two things: the domain name you type, and the technical data that every web request carries — your IP address, the browser identification and the language it asks for. We use them to answer the request, to decide which language to show you, and to apply per-address rate limits so a single visitor cannot exhaust the service for everyone else.
We do not ask for your name, your e-mail address or any other personal detail, and there is nothing to sign up for.
The domains you check are public
The home page lists the last fifty domains that anyone has checked, so a name you type may be visible to other visitors for a while. That list holds nothing but the domain names: it is not linked to your address, your browser or your other checks. If you would rather not have a name appear there, do not check it here.
Bear in mind, too, that building a report means querying the registry of the extension, the name servers of the domain itself, public resolvers around the world, public blocklists and the RDAP service of the registry. Those operators see the query as they would see any other DNS query.
Cookies we set ourselves

- Remembers the language you picked, for one year. Without it the site simply follows your browser language on every visit.
- csrftoken
- Protects the search box against cross-site request forgery. It is required for the form to work.
Both are strictly functional and neither is used to track you. The site stores nothing else in your browser: no local storage, no fingerprinting, no other cookie of ours.
What the page loads from third parties
Pages pull the jQuery library and the typeface from public content delivery networks (code.jquery.com and Google Fonts). Those providers see the IP address of the request, as happens with any resource loaded from another host. They set no cookies for us.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to know how many people visit and which pages they use. It collects aggregated statistics — pages viewed, approximate country, type of device. IP addresses are anonymised, and we ask Google to keep advertising storage disabled by default. We never see who you are, only totals.
Google AdSense
This site is free and pays for itself with advertising served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies or similar technologies to serve advertisements and measure how they perform, and third-party vendors may show ads based on your previous visits to this or other sites.
Where the law requires it, personalised advertising is only enabled after you give consent through Google's consent tool; if you refuse or the tool is unavailable, the ads you see are non-personalised. You can review or change your advertising preferences at any time in Google's own Ads Settings, and opt out of personalised advertising from participating vendors at aboutads.info. Browser settings or extensions that block third-party cookies work normally here.
Google's use of the data it collects through this site is governed by its own privacy policy, which you can read on Google's website.
How long anything is kept
Reports live in a short-lived cache measured in minutes, so that refreshing a page does not query the world again. The list of recently checked domains keeps fifty names and drops the oldest. Our web server writes an access log with IP addresses, which rotates daily and is deleted after two weeks. We keep no other record of what was checked or by whom.
Your rights
If you are in the European Union, the United Kingdom or another place with comparable rules, you may ask for access to the personal data held about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and object to its processing. Since this service keeps no accounts and no long-term record of who checked what, in practice there is very little to hand over or erase; write to us anyway and we will tell you exactly what exists.
For the data Google collects through its advertising and analytics products, those requests have to go to Google, since it acts as its own controller for that.
Changes to this policy
If the way the site works changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top is updated. There is no mailing list to notify, so it is worth a look if you use the site regularly.
